Toronto International Youth Dance Festival Raises Money For Sick Kids

Shawn Byfield and Toronto International Youth Dance Festival present cheque to Sick Kids Hospital.

No, I don’t have kids of my own. But I teach enough of them to know that any dollar raised for SICK KIDS HOSPITAL is going to good use. We all have family, friends, and collegues who’ve needed their services. I’m SO proud to announce the young performers of this year’s Toronto International Youth Dance Festival were able to raise exactly $1000 for the hospital, plus extra cash donations from friends and family!! The KIDS did this!

If you thought dance can’t change the world… if you thought kids can’t change the world… you’re WRONG. Our theme of the festival is KIDS HELPING KIDS. Note to dancers: It’s not always about competing and winning stuff. What’s more valuable is using your gift to make a difference in things that actually MATTER.

Just by sharing your passion for dance on stage, you made a difference in someone’s life. I’m very proud of all studios and dancers who participated. You made a difference, and we can’t wait to do more next year.

The team has done a super job showcasing diversity in dance, culture and ethnicity the past two years, and there’s even MORE this year. In fact, our organization has set up a CULTURE EXCHANGE. What’s that?

Well, I hope you’ve been paying attention to my encouragement to THINK BIGGER lately…

…because today, I’m at Canada’s National Ballet School teaching a large private group of bright young students who flew in… FROM BEIJING. How cool is that?!

Come see what the fuss is all about next Friday August 5th, at Toronto City Hall. Event starts at 4:30pm. I’ll be there all night, so be sure to say hi and let’s take a snap together. Most importantly, our next generation of superstar dancers of all cultures would LOVE your support!

NEWSFLASH: Toronto International Youth Dance Festival is happening!

If you didn’t know, If you don’t hear from me it’s because I’m always working on something. This one is big…

I’m very honoured to be on the Board of Directors of Toronto’s first festival supporting our next generation of dancers. I’ve partnered with some of the TOP leaders in the Canadian and international dance community, and we’re EXCITED. This is the first year, and we’re showcasing young dance talent.

If you’re interested in performing, we have a few slots still available so email me TODAY.

So, Why Toronto?

Because we are one of the most multicultural and diverse cities on EARTH. In Toronto, we are a microcosm of our ethnically diverse planet, and all the dance styles that span the globe can be tapped right here in our city.

And, as seen on So You Think You Can Dance Canada, we definitely have a TON of talent right here. Let’s remind Canada what an inspiration DANCERS are!

And Why Youth?

Because, well, why not? Dance gives youth an opportunity to develop the exact same leadership skills as athletes- perseverance, teamwork, discipline, courage, and confidence.

We have the Pan/Am games coming to Toronto next year. But what about our young dancers? They train just as hard and bust their butts in every class (or SHOULD be!) I started dancing at age six with jazz and tap dance, and it has brought me a wonderfully inspiring life I never imagined.

Dance is also an excellent, positive activity for youth to develop healthy habits, build solid relationships and explore unlimited creative possibilities…

…so we’ve created an organization that supports our next generation of performers, artists and leaders in our community. Note that I say leaders- because 1) it takes a true champion to be brave enough to embrace dance, and 2) some of our planet’s greatest societies involve artists as part of a way of life.
