Yes, it’s dance competition season. So train hard, show up focused, and commit to your team that you’ll do your best. But the most valuable prize is this: knowing you got out there and left your HEART on that stage. Dance with PASSION. When you start living like THAT, know what happens? Magic. Magic happens. And that’s a prize more fulfilling than ANY trophy.

Sending you energy and high-fives,

@ShawnByfield

Spark Dance Competition 2013

A few shots from the semi finals of Spark Show Production’s dance talent contest at Market Village in Markham. My Toronto dance studio Byfield Dance Experience is one of the prestigious sponsors for the event, and I’m one of the judges for the competition.

The finals are Saturday December 7th (TOMORROW) at CNTV Theatre, and the event is huge. How huge?

One of the prizes is a 5 day cruise in the Bahamas. That huge. Check out Spark Dance Competition on facebook to see behind the scenes video. And below are some shots from official photographer Paul Yang.

Sending positive energy, focus and determination to all the participants. Such a great dance event to start the holidays!

Helping To Build ConfiDANCE in High Schools

Shawn Byfield dance students

A few pics of my students at Newtonbrook High School in Toronto.

I’m excited for these dancers. They’ve been working on a piece for a competition in the TDSB. They collaborate on all the choreography themselves, with one student choreographer. Their dance teacher Joanna Perlus and I do nothing but coach & ask questions that help them explore space, levels, movement, and dig deeper within themselves to better tell their story.

Every time I return, they grow another level. Amazing what can happen when you give people, young or old- an outlet to be creative. Dance is truly within every single one of us! Very proud of my work with the youth and extremely proud of how much they’ve grown.

The preliminary competition is next week, and they are working HARD. But at this point it doesn’t matter if they continue to the finals. As cliche as it sounds, they’ve totally won a prize that dwarfs any trophy: the freedom dance gives you, a renewed confiDance, and the experience and relationships they develop through the process.

Merde dancers, you make me proud!

@ShawnByfield

UPDATE: They killed it on stage and made it to the final round! Super work dancers! – SB
