DON’T take your gifts for granted! If you decided 2013 you would exercise/dance more, and you haven’t yet, guess what?

That can all change in the blink of an eye. It kills me to see…

…people take their abilities for granted. I created a safe place where friends can keep fit, throw down and release stress. I bust my butt every single day to encourage YOU to take class, get inspired, and surround yourself with positivity because that’s the best way to live!

But now, that’s changed…

…I was fine one minute, then instantly lost mobility the next. All I want to do is dance again! Teaching isn’t possible for a while, this sucks. I’m having a hard time encouraging YOU because honestly, I’m too busy thinking about ME.

Open Your Eyes! Look Around You…

So. Some of you need to wake up:

There are people in this world who would give EVERYTHING to have your health, your legs, your opportunities, or even just a CHOICE to improve and make life better. You are blessed and fortunate to have a choice.

Right now, injury has taken away my choice until I fully recover. As Mos Def says:

“Tomorrow may never come… for you and me, life is not promised.”

My blunt message to you is to STOP making excuses in your life and effing TRY something. If you don’t like it or it’s not for you, that’s OK! Just TRY. You DON’T know what will happen tomorrow.

As always, I share because I care. And Thank You for those of you who reached out, I appreciate your thoughts and energy.

Why You Should Kick Your Excuses To The Curb

WOW. Some people! Ok, I need to vent.

But what’s with the bra, you ask? I’ll tell you more about that later… Here’s what’s on my mind:

I really, truly, strongly dislike when people say can’t. Especially when I teach. You know, when people look me in the eye and say

“I can’t do this, I can’t do that…” I’m sure you know the type:

1.) The ones who simply don’t try. 2.) The few who admit defeat without even lifting a finger to see if they could. 3.) The ones who, when you’re giving your all, trying your absolute best and making an attempt at greatness, they continue to be the grey storm clouds filled with thunder and lightning, come to ruin a beautiful, sun-filled afternoon in the tropics.

Coincidentally, male or female, they all seem to own the same birth certificate because they share the exact same name:

“Debbie Downer”

And Debbie loves company. I call them energy suckers.

Anytime I meet an energy sucker in dance class, or waiting for the delayed streetcar, or buying cereal in aisle 3, (or any other place that humans congregate) I have the sudden urge to bolt like an Olympic sprinter to the men’s room because Grumpy Gary, Lazy Larry & Negative Nancy PISS me off.

Yeah, I said it.

STOP and listen Debbie. Listen real good, because this message is for you. I need to tell you something maybe you haven’t heard before: YES, you can.

Damnit Debbie! I said YES YOU CAN!

Sure, maybe not today. Or maybe not even this week. There’s no magic button you can push that will miraculously boost your confidence in 3 minutes or less, like one of those frozen TV dinners.

But if you try, practice, and STOP making excuses for your lack of effort you’ll see that eventually, in time, you CAN.

Let’s say your slightly-above-minimum-wage-too-much-black-tea-drinking-always-in-your-personal-space employer were to say to you: “Downer! I want you to try this” and you reply with “No dude, I can’t” without any real effort… regardless of how you feel about him or her you’d eventually get fired. Kicked to the curb.

So why fire yourself without trying? Don’t do it Debbster.

And while I’m at it…

Lose The Bra! (Or The BRO, As Kramer Would Have It)

Here’s a tip:

Change your attitude to challenges and you’ll achieve success quicker. Here’s how…

Shift your mindset when something “different” presents itself. Learn to embrace a little change. Don’t be afraid. Say to  yourself “Ok, let’s see what happens when I try this…” You might surprise yourself!

Throughout history the leaders, shows, businesses, artists, books and technologies that made an effort to try, think and embrace something different became the most successful. Tell yourself you CAN do it. Your mind will believe you.

So drop the excuses Double D, and throw out the negative support like a bad department store brassiere. (It never looked good on you anyway.) Burn that bad attitude! Judo-kick the self-defeating, self-doubting crap to the curb and start trying. Make an effort. Be optimistic.

And you’ll eventually see that yes, you can, Can, CAN!

Tap Dancing in Canada

There’s a fun dance studio I’m working with out here, teaching tap dance and hip hop dance workshops. Today, while working with the senior students, one of the girls blurted out:

“Uuugh! I can’t do this!” She was referring to a breakdance step I was teaching them on the floor.

“What did you just say?” I questioned her. So, me being the cool and calm guy that I am, I stopped the class.

“It’s ummm… really difficult!” She laughed back. We all had a laugh, because just yesterday, I had a chat with them. We talked about our choice of words, and that the word CAN’T doesn’t exist in my class. So I responded something like this:

“Ok guys, listen up… Because I don’t think you took me seriously yesterday. Let me tell you something.

The word “can’t” is THE most self-defeating, most negative word in the English language. It’s a dangerous word. You know why?”

No response. So I continued:

“Because that word sends a negative message to your subconscious. To the back of your head. When you hear it, your brain starts to think, Ok, maybe I can’t do this…

When your brain hears that enough times, guess what? It starts to believe it. Then it leads to a whole bunch of other things. You start to doubt yourself. You start to believe that you really can’t do something.

It gets worse. Because of that, you get frustrated. You get mad whenever there’s a challenge. Then, when your brain has heard it enough times, you get super angry and you just stop trying altogether. You quit.

And down the line, guess what happens? You quit dance. All because YOU TOLD YOURSELF I can’t.”

The room was dead silent. Just one minute before, the room was filled with laughter, energy, sweat, and moving bodies. After I said that, not one person moved.

“So here’s what we’re going to do,” I challenged them. “Starting right now, this minute. Whenever I hear the word “can’t” come from any of your mouths, every single one of you will drop down and give me 10 pushups.”

Talk about a groan! You’d think I made them eat horse dung or something!

“And… there’s more. This applies to ANYWHERE in the studio, not just in my class. Even if I hear one of you in the change room use that evil word, I’m gonna come in and say HEY! I heard that! Everyone drop down and gimme 10. I don’t care if you’re like “OMG Shawn, I’m naked”… you all drop down and gimme 10 pushups.”

Boy, that got a laugh. But they understood where I was coming from.

I told them that it doesn’t just apply to dance. As they age, they’ll run into tons of negativity from others. Toxic people saying “You can’t do this… You can’t do that.”

Learn to rule them out. It’s not true. YOU CAN. And you don’t need to ruin the situation more by being your own worst enemy.

So I wanted to share this. Because how many times do you find yourself using that word on a daily basis? And why? Yes, it can be a hard habit to beat. But it’s not impossible. It can be done.

I share this with my current tap dance and hip hop students. And you will definitely hear me share positive thinking in my new Wednesday NIGHTCLUB classes. I’ll actually be using a microphone, so you’ll be able to hear me loud and clear when I say “We DON’T use can’t here!”

Listen, I’m not the wisest man on the planet. But now that you understand the damage of that word, will you choose to think differently? Your brain will believe whatever you tell it to believe.

So why not think you CAN?

From now on, when you come to dance, rise to the challenge. Believe in yourself. Tell your brain that you are capable. Tell your brain it’s doing a good job. It will do better. YOU will do better!

Because, apparently… nobody wants to do my pushups. ;-)
