Here’s SOMETHING You Can Try To Defeat Daily Negative News

I work hard to make a positive contribution to this planet in all that I do. Period.

Bringing joy to people’s lives, removing doubt, building confidence, and setting a positive example is being part of the SOLUTION. I refuse to be part of the problem and seen as a stereotype. I resist being typecast, there’s enough of that on TV. I refuse to let these daily negative news stories derail me from my purpose.

But I gotta say, as each week unfolds, it’s becoming more and more challenging to climb this mountain…

Anybody feel me?

Here’s what I try to do. Maybe it’ll help someone reading this:

The quickest way to make a difference is to be actionable. Every day, DO SOMETHING that makes people remember their purpose. DO SOMETHING that brings joy to lives. DO SOMETHING to remind people that good still exists. DO SOMETHING to enrich your community. DO SOMETHING to nourish your own soul and fill your well, so you can pour into others. DO SOMETHING to remind the media that for every 1 negative story, there’s 99 positive ones happening right under your nose you deserve to hear about.

Don’t fall in the trap of aimlessly trolling social media just to comment, judge, and expand hate. You’re better than that, we all are.

* Sigh. *

Dear Bob Marley, Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye, we need your songs right now.

Through all this heartache around us, I encourage you to be a difference maker. We need to fight for what’s right, and it starts by being a positive light in your family and community. DO SOMETHING to enrich people’s lives every time they meet you. DO SOMETHING to exchange smiles.

Be a teacher, and share a vision of admiration, of connection, and of hope. Be a student, and ask what it takes to bring peace not just to others in your circle, but also to yourself- because sometimes the toughest battle is held in that small space between your ears.

I need every human reading this to FIGHT to be a part of the solution! Because you deserve it.

Who’s in?

If you’re in, share something of VALUE below. No rants. No pointing fingers. No them vs us. No hashtags. Take a moment to say something GOOD, because that’s what the world needs right now.

The Beatles had it right when they sang all we need is ____. You have the power to DO SOMETHING about it, so share some!

I LOVE hearing good news from my dancers and friends.

Just found out one of them made the callback for Argos Cheerleaders! Out of 165 girls fighting to get paid to dance, do community work, and cheer on Toronto’s Grey Cup winning team, she’s in!

PLUS: one of my friends, after shadowing me, improving her presentation skills and contacting the right people went from adjudicating ZERO competitions to judging 8 events this year. Zero to hero, just like that!

AND my littlest one who’s 12 (TWELVE, just to be clear) got FIRST PLACE in her tap category, AND first place junior soloist in the ENTIRE competition- that’s hundreds of entries… twice! (She did this last month too)

I’m so very proud of you girls, you worked your BUTTS OFF. I know you wanted this, and I believed in you. Still do, it isn’t over!

I’m honoured to be part of a winning team.

Now On The Flip Side…

Those are just a few stories. Now on the flip side, if only everyone actually listened to me, ugghh.

I have the world’s SIMPLEST two-step formula for winning. The dancers who invest in my training are successful because they are:

  1. COACHABLE and
  2. Put in the WORK

Because of the world’s simplest, easy-as-pie, doesn’t-require-a-scientist, actionable two steps (ONLY TWO!) they performed with Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, Stratford Festival, Disney, Broadway, major movies and more. They get to share their passion with the world, and bring in many tens of thousands of dollars. The BIG bucks.

Dance and get paid? Trust me, it’s not a bad deal.

But allow me to be BLUNT: If you want it, you need to…

Shut Your Pie Hole

Sad part is, most of us are stuck in ego and excuse world. Why you “can’t” do this and why you “can’t” do that. “I’m not this enough. I’m not that enough.”

Shut your pie hole and open your eyes, because others are ALREADY doing what you want to achieve! Look around you! Turn on the TV, read a magazine, open a book, look online… There’s no question that whatever you want is possible…

…YOU just need to invest the time and resources to get there.

GOOD NEWS!

Your investment always pays off in the end- IF YOU WANT IT BAD ENOUGH and you’re willing to shut up, put your ego aside, and work with someone who can ACTUALLY get you there.

Think about it. What’s your response when Ryan asks you:

What do you want?

What do you WANT??

I already know it will happen, I know you will win. And I’m always rooting for you! =D

Impatient? READ THIS… How Does This Popular Movie Quote Relate To Your Current Life?

image

So in my world, so much can change in 8 hours! Here’s a real-TIME story unfolding right now:

Two hours ago I was at home in my underwear. Now, I’m lying down comfortably in my honeywagon, after a major movie production sent a driver to pick me up and bring me to set. Yup, I’ve been requested.

UPDATE: I was Adam Sandler’s movement coach for this movie:

How The Heck Did I Get Here? (And Other Random Ramblings)

If you want it, you have to PREPARE for it. I’m constantly striving to become the person I am capable of being. Working hard is NOT the same as working smart. Understand the difference, then do both! Sometimes that means late nights or earlier mornings. Many times it requires doing something that makes you uncomfortable.

Everything you want in life is just outside your comfort zone.

Listen. Whatever you want you’re not going to get right away. I’ve worked diligently for years to build a reputation of being an expert in my field. So now, sometimes unexpectedly, I land a gig and appear on set literally hours later. Pretty cool sh*t. 🙂

There’s a popular saying in the movie biz:

“I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too!”

That’s a good one, no? Damn witches…

But the one I’m referring to is actually “Hurry Up And Wait.” It’s important to notice how that directly relates to our personal growth as well. Invest in yourself NOW. Work hard NOW…

…Then be patient. You might not see instant success but you will reap the benefits in the future.

Wait for it. It’s coming!

Are You Selfish? Here’s The Best Way To Use It For Others

image

Let’s face it… It’s actually NOT about you.

Zig Ziglar said it best: come from a place of service. Put other people’s wants needs and desires first. When you help enough people get what they want, you’ll in turn be rewarded with what you want.

Wow! Rocket science!

I’ve always loved this principle, and work hard to encourage or inspire others around me. But don’t get me wrong. You might relate to me on this one…

Yup, Totally Selfish

image

It’s true- we all have wants and needs and we all need help to achieve our goals. I have giant dreams. Pretty sure you do also. As humans, we’re totally selfish by nature. It’s a survival thing, and that’s OK.

BUT! The life altering difference is realizing this: People genuinely WANT to help others that genuinely care about them. Consider this fact: Helping others is embedded in the deepest fibers of our being. I support you, you support me. And the cycle continues.

Isn’t that the way it should be?

“Yeah, But I Feel Bad For Asking…”

Don’t worry… There’s nothing wrong in wanting something. There’s nothing wrong in having desires. And there’s NOTHING WRONG with somebody wanting something from YOU.

The question to ask yourself is this: Will your exchange be a mutual beneficial one? Or is one of you being greedy or self indulgent at the others expense?

Listen… Healthy tribes and communities are not grown through individual greed.

It’s not about you! Its actually about “we.” How can WE help each other? That’s how healthy communities thrived for thousands of years. Everyone had something unique to offer. They in turn relied on the services and asked help of others to prosper provide for their family.

image

So let me ask you… How have you shown interest in others lately? How have you tried to help THEM? And how can you aid, help or simply encourage just one more person today?

Here’s your chance to find ways to nurture, help and encourage others. You’ll find a reward waiting for you!

Have an inspired week,
– Shawn B

Helping To Build ConfiDANCE in High Schools

Shawn Byfield dance students

A few pics of my students at Newtonbrook High School in Toronto.

I’m excited for these dancers. They’ve been working on a piece for a competition in the TDSB. They collaborate on all the choreography themselves, with one student choreographer. Their dance teacher Joanna Perlus and I do nothing but coach & ask questions that help them explore space, levels, movement, and dig deeper within themselves to better tell their story.

Every time I return, they grow another level. Amazing what can happen when you give people, young or old- an outlet to be creative. Dance is truly within every single one of us! Very proud of my work with the youth and extremely proud of how much they’ve grown.

The preliminary competition is next week, and they are working HARD. But at this point it doesn’t matter if they continue to the finals. As cliche as it sounds, they’ve totally won a prize that dwarfs any trophy: the freedom dance gives you, a renewed confiDance, and the experience and relationships they develop through the process.

Merde dancers, you make me proud!

@ShawnByfield

UPDATE: They killed it on stage and made it to the final round! Super work dancers! – SB
