Dora Award winning dance choreographer and Gemini Award nominee Shawn Byfield is widely recognized as a leading instructor of hip hop and tap dance classes and choreography. With over 22 years of experience in the dance industry, he has been an energetic dance instructor and dance choreographer to thousands of students and professional clients across the country and internationally.
Shawn is the creator of Toronto’s original hip hop dance lessons and tap dance lessons, where he teaches people of all ages and ability how to learn dance choreography while enjoying great exercise. His students range from the trained dance professional to the person who’s never danced a day in their life.
Not only does he teach people how to become a better performer, Shawn also practices what he teaches- performing on shows for Toronto’s major TV networks, national TV commercials and some of his film credits include Blues Brothers 2000, Bojangles, The Ladies Man, Death to Smoochie, The Music Man, The Cheetah Girls, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and most recently, Hairspray featuring John Travolta, Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes and Queen Latifah.
When not performing, Shawn keeps busy as a live show and event choreographer. He was recently the recipient of a Dora Mavor Moore Award for his show "i think i can", which garnered five nominations and received the 2007 Dora Award for Outstanding New Musical. He is also a Nominee for the 2007 Gemini Awards.
In addition, Shawn is an adjudicator for dance competitions, a respected internet marketer and consultant, and Artistic Director of Toronto dance companies Thrive! Entertainment, as well as his tap dance ensemble Funk Factory.
